Hoosier Burn Camp Begins Monday

Memorial Day marks the start of a week at camp for young burn survivors from across Indiana.

Over 70 burn survivors, age 8 to 18, will be at Hoosier Burn Camp this year. Hoosier Burn Camp provides campers with a week of traditional camp activities and programs that build self- esteem and foster friendships. There is also a fun theme every year, with “Game Shows” being the focus for 2013.

“The week at camp gives our kids a break from the stares and questions they can get in day to day life” said Mark Koopman, Executive Director of Hoosier Burn Camp. “They come to an atmosphere where their scars are normal, where the other kids have had similar experiences, and for a week they can be “just one of the kids”.

Hoosier Burn Camp is supported entirely by donations, which allow campers to attend at no cost to their families.

Parent Survival Guide for 2013 Campers

If you are attending the camp May 27-31, 2013, you may be wondering when you need to arrive at camp, what to pack, and what the theme is.  This Parent Survival Guide (also found on the Resources page) should answer most (if not all) of your questions.  After reading the Parent Survival Guide, should you have any additional questions, please contact Koop or Kim.

Also, if you would like to print this directly off of our website or Facebook and save HBC a stamp, please comment on this post by May 1st and we will NOT mail you an additional copy.

Thanks!

March 16-17 in Downtown Indianapolis - Pass the Hat

  • Georgia Street, Indianapolis, Tilted Kilt, Kilroy's, The Pub and Howl at the Moon
  • Hoosier Burn Camp will have a spot under the tent on Georgia Street. All four restaurants will be passing fire helmets around every hour for donations. Come out and enjoy live music all weekend while helping support a great cause...KIDS.

Hoosier Burn Camp is excited for the opportunity to work with well over 200 unique burn survivors in 2013. We have already hosted an event in Brown County at the end of January that served roughly 230 burn survivors, their immediate family members, and volunteers. The goal of helping campers by creating holistic healing for the whole family has been largely accomplished by folks who have responded to our call of support. Over this last weekend and President’s Day we were able to take 18 teenage burn survivors to Wisconsin for skiing, snowboarding, and the opportunity to experience high impact tower to tower zip lining. These small group outings are some of my favorite as they allow moments to flesh out quite a bit of detail in our campers day to day challenges. In all, we will have 12-13 camper related events that allow HBC the opportunity to work on the trauma associated with severe burn injury, and all of this at no cost to the camper family.

Thank you in advance for your support, especially if you have participated in one of the many HBC related events or fundraisers in past years. Please note that our Visitor’s Day is Wednesday, May 29th at Camp Tecumseh, YMCA from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Itinerary and directions will be on our web-site soon.
